There are many ways to decorate a room with hard wood flooring. But if you’re looking for an idea that will add a little colour to a room without taking away from the natural beauty of your oak flooring, here are some ideas to help you think creatively. 1.    Colourful Area Rugs Area rugs in rich earth tones like scarlet, dark brown, and hunter green can add some warmth and vibrancy to any room with solid oak floors. Choose bold patterns like large flowers, or more traditional ones like paisley, or a braided rope effect. Other colour schemes that might be fun to play with are turquoise, orange, and purple, or bright yellow and lime green. Choose several different area rugs and put them in places like by a hearth, under a window, or beside a sofa. You could also make your own rug by finding some craft patterns or ideas online or in a magazine. 2.    Dramatic Curtains Windows provide blank canvases in rooms, allowing you to be creative and add some flair. Curtains can be used to add a focal point to any room. Long drapes that reach the floor are perfect for large windows and glass doors. Use bold colours to draw the eye, or if you want to make the room seem large and more airy, use white or cream. If you have smaller windows, you may wish to use a simple swag across the tops of the windows, or use traditional lace curtains. But don’t be afraid of using colour, no matter the size of your windows. 3.    Large Flower Arrangements Rooms with hardwood floors are often the more formal rooms in homes—dining rooms and front rooms, for instance. And flowers always add a touch of elegance to any formal setting. You can use fresh cut flowers from your garden or a local florist, or you can use high quality silk flowers.  Choose colours that coordinate with your decorating scheme, and use tall glass or porcelain vases in windowsills or on end tables to showcase your blooms. 4.    Modern Artwork Add some further colour to your walls by hanging a few choice pieces of modern art. Modern art is known for its bold and bright patterns. Choose something that fits well with your colour scheme, and draws the eye. If you can’t afford originals, don’t be afraid to purchase prints. You can find them online, and in many department stores. Bold photographs can also add a touch of colour, or if you like dramatic black and white photography, simply finish your pictures with brightly coloured frames. These are just a few of the many ways you can add colour to one of your rooms with hardwood flooring.
